ABM Excavation Toolbox Talks

July 7, 2026

Last week, our safety team held a Toolbox Talk on Excavations for the Phase 3 of the Harold Cross Education Campus and Killeen’s Lane Housing project in Wexford to reinforce our “Build Safely” core value. Participation included all site staff and specialist subcontractors.

The talks on both sites covered a range of topics such as storage of underground service ducting, People-Plant interfaces, exclusions zones, permits, and the hazards associated with excavations, such as collapses and falls from height.

Safe working practices are reinforced throughout all our sites, particularly when working with machinery. On our site in Killeens, our groundworker Cadogan Plant Hire and Civil Engineering discussed scanning the grounds before work takes place and the hazards presented by underground services that could be in that work area.

In Harold Cross, SAF Building & Civil Engineeringhighlighted the importance of approaching excavators correctly and maintaining eye contact with the operator. A visual demonstration was then carried out to showcase how limited operators’ vision is from the cab to emphasize the necessity of following proper procedures around machinery.

Thank you to all involved for their valuable input, engagement and constructive discussion that followed the session. The participation and shared experiences help reinforce safe working practices across our projects.
